The current gen version of the game is also available on PlayStation 5 and PC. The PS4 and Xbox One versions of WWE 2K25 do not include The Island.
What’s New in WWE 2K25?
WWE 2K25 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it need to — but it builds on the solid foundation of WWE 2K24.
The game keeps its great match presentation from last year with new camera angles, more visible in-match damage effects, fun gameplay, and a wide range of accessibility and difficulty options.
If you’re new to WWE 2K games, you might want to play around with the difficulty settings and try the tutorials in the WWE Performance Center found on the main menu. There’s also helpful in-match tutorials when you first play the game and each mode.
There are definitely some welcome additions in WWE 2K25 and some well… no one really asked for. Let’s dive in.
New Match Types: Intergender, Bloodline Rules, Underground
Intergender matches are back in WWE Games. You can have Rhea Ripley square off against Dude Love or pit your custom character against Dakota Kai. However, these matches are limited to certain modes and can’t be played in MyGM or MyFaction, which feels unnecessarily limited.
Next up are Bloodline Rules matches. Whether you’re playing as The Bloodline or John Cena taking on Uncle Howdy, chaos via interference is the name of the game. If you’re a “good guy,” (babyface) your allies will run in to help, while the “bad guys” (heel) will have their own reinforcements. It’s a wild, no-DQ-style match that mirrors the WrestleMania 40 main event between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. It’s pure chaos and it’s awesome.
Then there’s Underground matches, inspired by Shane McMahon’s wacky Raw Underground idea that later found its way to NXT. These matches have no ropes and you can only win via submission or knockout with superstars surrounding the ring.
This year, you can even brawl backstage in locations like the WWE Archive and even outside at the dreaded NXT Parking Lot!
Graphical Improvements and Showcase Mode
Visually, WWE 2K25 has stepped up its game, with more detailed damage and sweat effects. The stamina and damage systems remain intact to help you get an idea of how to target your opponent’s weaknesses as the match wears on.
The 2K Showcase Mode this year focuses on The Bloodline Dynasty featuring the legendary Anoa’i Family including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Roman Reigns, The Usos, Yokozuna, Nia Jax, Tamina Snuka, Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Rikishi, The Wild Samoans, and High Chief Peter Maivia.
Narrated by The Bloodline’s “Wiseman” Paul Heyman, this mode lets you relive iconic matches like Hulk Hogan vs. Yokozuna (I love beating up Hulk Hogan any day of the week), as well as rewrite history with dream matchups like George “The Animal” Steele vs. High Chief Peter Maivia in a steel cage match.
You can also change the course of history and turn the odds in favor of the Anoa’i Family (i.e. The Headshrinkers vs. Steiner Bros. at WrestleMania 9).
The return of in-game cutscenes with authentic-sounding commentary are a nice touch, avoiding the annoying transition to real-life footage seen in the previous games.
WWE 2K25 MyRise NXT Mutiny: Standout Career Mode
WWE 2K25’s career mode MyRise is back and much better than ever. This year’s storyline, MyRise Mutiny aka NXT Mutiny, draws inspiration from the old-school Nexus stable takeover in Summer of 2010, led by NXT alumni.
You can play as either a male or female superstar, working your way up the ranks while taking down the evil faction known as NXT Mutiny (think Nexus 2025). The voice acting, mystery elements, and plot twists make this story more streamlined and realistic compared to previous years.
The voice acting is noticeably better, but there’s still some wooden dialogue here and there, along with some non-WWE non-playable characters (NPC) looking not as polished as WWE superstars.
WWE 2K25 MyFaction and Microtransactions
MyFaction is WWE 2K’s answer to Ultimate Team modes found in EA Sports games. It’s pretty much the wrestling version of MyTeam in NBA 2K25 and that’s not a good thing.
While it can be fun, it heavily encourages microtransactions. The Bloodline Edition includes MyFaction DLC packs like Wyatt 6, Undertaker, The Bloodline, and Nation of Domination, but the mode itself feels grindy no matter what version of the game you have and is less engaging compared to the other content.
WWE 2K25 Universe Mode: Old Reliable — with PROMOS!
Universe Mode remains an old reliable fan favorite, offering fully customizable storylines, intergender matches, and the return of promos! If only the resources for MyFaction were put into Universe Mode, it’d be even better.
I’d love to see the WWE 2K team also find a way to merge aspects of Universe Mode into MyGM.
WWE 2K25’s The Island: A Missed Opportunity
The Island is WWE 2K25’s attempt at an open-world experience, more similar to NBA 2K’s Neighborhood than a tame WWE version of GTA or an RPG-type add-on. While it looks impressive on the surface with its WWE-themed buildings, statues, and iconography, it falls flat in execution.
The environment feels lifeless as you walk, run, or lag around depending on the server. The challenges are grindy and the customization options require a lot of effort (or money) to unlock. Sure, like MyFaction, you can play this mode without spending any money and kill some time, but its geared towards making you want to speedrun the challenges by purchasing Virtual Currency (VC) with very real, not-so-virtual United States Dollars.
The different levels aren’t exactly inspiring and the dialogue with static images and lack of animation gives me major WWE 2K20 No, that is not a compliment. You have a lack of animations. You just have an image of R-Truth or Johnny Gargano or Dakota Kai or Xavier Woods or whomever you interact with and just a dialogue box… It just feels very WWE 2K20.
If anybody played the DLC for WWE 2K20, it kind of was like that. That doesn’t bring back good memories because WWE 2K20 was by far the worst WWE 2K in history. Not good.
I sincerely hope WWE 2K25 doesn’t go in the direction of NBA 2K, as that once lovable basketball series has sunk way too many resources for 2K shareholders and frankly, not enough for the gamers that made it a powerhouse franchise in the first place.
WWE 2K25 Gameplay and Camera Improvements
The core gameplay remains smooth and enjoyable, with the added option of a third-person camera and spectator cam during entrances.
One major gripe from recent years remains and that’s the lack of an Accelerator feature for players who bought the highest tier of WWE 2K25 (in this case, The Bloodline Edition).
Even if you buy the highest-tier edition, you still have to grind through multiple modes to unlock all content — as in what you already paid $130 for. WWE 2K needs to ditch this policy that punishes their most loyal players and should allow them to play the game how they want to play it, with all the perks and at-launch DLC available to use from the start.
WWE 2K25 MyGM Mode: Fun But Limited Even with Online
MyGM returns and lets you step into the role of a general manager, with new options like playing as the NXT Mutiny brand, additional GM selections like Armando Estrada, and online multiplayer.
Unfortunately, while in-depth in some areas, it’s still limited in terms of match types and customization. For example, you can’t create a women’s champion for ECW and they don’t bother to tell you that until after you’ve drafted your roster.
Multi-person matches are still restricted in MyGM, most notably WarGames. It’s still one of my favorite modes and there’s a nice rush you get from slowly upgrading your venues, production, and roster, but WWE 2K needs to patch things up and remove the handcuffs like Universe Mode.
WWE 2K25 Review Score and Final Verdict
Overall, WWE 2K25 The Bloodline Edition earns an 8 out of 10 from TSC Gaming and Entertainment.
WWE 2K25 builds on the solid foundation of WWE 2K24 with new match types, improved graphics, and engaging modes like MyRise Mutiny and 2K Showcase. It’s slightly held back by grindy microtransaction-heavy modes and a lackluster open-world experience in The Island, but not enough to take away from the improvements and consistently fun game as a whole.
Let’s hope that WWE 2K listens to its fans and invests more in MyGM, MyRise, and Universe Mode, and less in ways to make us spend even more money on a game we already bought — especially in this economy!
If you’re a wrestling fan or just looking for a fun fighting game, WWE 2K25 is worth picking up. You’ll find plenty of content to sink your teeth into, from its massive roster to its robust creation suite.
